Ben Howard: Sultry Sounds
Ben Howard is a singer-songwriter from the tranquil south west of England. Growing up surfing and playing guitar, Ben has evolved into one of the most talked about up and coming talents on the music scene. His life is a non stop whirlwind of touring, recording and surfing but he has taken a little time out of his schedule to answer a few questions just for the FLOW ladies.

Hi Ben, how are you?
All good thanks. Enjoying the start of a lovely summer!
So a bit of background information, where did you grow up? And how did you get into music and surfing?
I grew up in Devon and started playing a guitar my mother restrung for me when I was about eight. I started surfing at about 11 as it seemed pretty fun and the coast at home is a beautiful place to hang around.
Who has inspired you both on and off the water?
A number of people along the way, I always have a lot of respect for people who live positively and put in the effort regardless of any adversities. There's a lot of names I could put here.
When did you decide to make music more than just your passion?
I dropped out of University after I did a European support for Xavier Rudd and I got picked up by Quiksilver. I thought I might well be able to play music full time. It’s taken a while but it’s a real dream to be able to do it for a living.
You have performed at some great events, including Boardmasters in the UK, what have been the highlights so far? And what is coming up in your schedule that you are super stoked about?
Touring is so full of highs and lows, supporting Xavier at a sold out Shepherds Bush empire was definitely one highlight, I played an electric solo in front of 2000 people with Angus and Julia stone which was pretty funny, and the other day we played at 3,000metres on a glacier in the alps, that was memorable to say the least. We’ve got a bunch of festivals coming up so I’m very looking forward to just enjoying the English summer, sunny fields and a few beers.
Guys might be stronger than girls, but girls are......
Stronger than small animals?
One thing you will never understand about women…
I will never understand how well women deal with other people, their patience and time for others is something that always gets me thinking.
When you realise the person who cut back harder than you is a woman you think......
It’s about time
Would you rather have endless wealth but nobody to share it with, or be head over heels in love and totally broke?
I think we all know that one.
Which of the following would you give up if you had to, sex, surfing or music?
Each one is pretty dependent on the other. Impossible. If I had to loose an arm or a leg I’d go with leg if that helps? I’ve thought about that one a fair bit.
If a girl asked you for some help sorting out her surf board would you
a)jump at the chance and have the kit tuned up and ready to go before she can get her wetsuit on
b)give her a helping hand, while chatting to her about surfing
c)be talked into it with the promise of copius amounts of beer
d)ask her to stop winding you up as you know she is more than capable of rigging up herself
The last month has been windless, flat and raining, Saturday is fast approaching and the forecast is looking awesome, perfect swell, and sunshine, but then your computer calendar pops up reminding you there is a very important family gathering on the same day. What do you do?
a)give surfing a miss, family are the most important thing
b)get up ridiculously early, go for a sunrise surf and make it just in time
c)get a decent surf session in, but cut it a bit short, turn up fashionably late, your family know you well enough to understand
d)call up on Saturday morning, put on your best ‘I’m really sick’ voice, while hoping they haven’t checked the swell forecast
Watersports girls rock because....
Most of them listen to Hendrix.
A massive thanks Ben, look forward to seeing you on or atleast near a beach this summer.
