FLOW Ladies Only Wave Clinic - Cabo Verde Write Up

CAPE VERDE CLINIC

The first Flow international wave clinic in Sal, Cabo Verde went down very well. Despite not having pumping conditions with either wind or waves we did have a bit of both and spent every day out on the water. This year the conditions seem to have been badly affected by the La Nina cycle and it has been a cold windy and flat winter (comparative to previous years). However we were really lucky to have the return of the sunshine which allowed us some great days of warm water playtime.

The idea of the clinic was to get together a group of females to learn a bit about waves, to push each other and to enjoy the warm waters of Cabo Verde. We certainly managed to achieve this!

CAPE VERDE CLINICCAPE VERDE CLINICThe first day was no wind and some small SUPing waves so we did a nice long downwind paddle stopping off on the South West point to play in the small waves and then round the corner for a drink, the afternoon was spent hiking up a small mountain to see the nesting sea eagles followed by some snorkelling and yoga. After this, the wind filled in sufficiently to allow us to spend the remaining days on the east coast progressing with both powered up and light wind wave techniques such as chicken gybes, cutbacks and forward loop encouragement. The off water time was spent practicing yoga, learning about the theory behind wind waves / ground swells / forecasting, hanging out at the beach club and watching some of the latest windsurfing movies!!

CAPE VERDE CLINICCAPE VERDE CLINIC14 year old Gioia, from Italy, was super keen to progress in the waves, one of the first things we managed to achieve was to get her on a board sub 100ltrs, which instantly gave her more control. She realised that she could sail around happily under powered in the waves on a 90ltr board without any concerns and with some encouragement when the wind filled in she went for a forward loop!

Sheena who’s more than happy sailing around on the flat water but was apprehensive of the waves was absolutely delighted to have the enthusiasm on the beach to encourage her out into the waves and once out there she had a blast and loved every minute.

CAPE VERDE CLINICCAPE VERDE CLINICCAPE VERDE CLINICAll in all everyone had a great time, met some great enthusiastic females and hopefully learnt a little to take away for the next sessions.

Thanks to all those who joined in and hopefully we can do the same again next year.
