Feminine Freestyle in Bonaire
Just a little report from Bonaire where I have been training freestyle the last 6 weeks.
Amazing to stick away over the winter, as Denmark isn’t so surf friendly at that time. Ahh, nice! I’ve been here in Bonaire the last three years for training, and I keep coming back - I really like the place. The wind has been up and down this year though, but we’ve had at least 2 weeks of perfect conditions. Really nice!
I have been training a lot with some other girls here – actually we had a girls only session one day, with only freestyle girls on the water - such a cool experience. It’s inspiring and lots of fun to be with the girls on the water, and we can really push each other. I can recommend it!
Among the girls was my friends dutch Arrianne Aukes (H-131 also known from the PWA world tour), dutch Rose who nearly got her first airjibe yesterday in front of Sorobon Beach Resort and young Maxime van Gent (check out her slick spock on Continentseven) – hopefully soon on tour as well. It is really nice to practice together with the girls, and it doesn’t happen so often that we’ve got the waters for ourselves, like this day. We were just practicing, crashing, screaming and ended up laying in the water chatting on our surfboards. Pretty cosy! I like to surf with anyone – boys and girls, but it is different to be just girls, and once in a while it is really fun to try.
Except for the girl surf there has been a lot of nice other session – like the morning sessions. I live with Arrianne here, and we usually wake up pretty early, swallow some oat meal for breakfast, tighten the harness and overcome the cool thrill of the water which hasn’t been warmed up from the sun at this time and get out there with only a few other surfers. Ahh! Perfect beginning of the day!
In Bonaire you can reach the sandy bottom almost everywhere in the lagoon. It makes it good for training, as you can just stand up and try again after a crash. I like that. On the really good days an afternoon session can be fitted in as well – this is mostly when all the freestylers are gathered. The guys pull off their tricks close to the coastline where those that takes a break have the camera ready, and so it goes on until the sun goes down.
Now I am in Maui for my first photoshoot there. I am really excited about that! :)
All the best,
